Botox® Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA) and Dysport® (abobotulinumtoxinA) are both FDA-approved products. Botox® Cosmetic and Dysport® are similar products, simply made by different manufacturers. Botox vs. Dysport is the new Coke vs. Pepsi! Some of our patients have a personal preference.
Both products are derived from botulinum toxin Type A, used to relax muscles in patients, must be injected every 3 to 4 months, have gradual onset in 2 to 7 days, and both have been in use for years; Botox® in the United States and Dysport® in Europe (as Reloxin).
Botox® Cosmetic: $13/unit
As Dysport® is a smaller-sized molecule, the unit measurement is different from Botox®. Dr. Welch and Susan use a 3-to-1 ratio, so they inject 60 units of Dysport® into an area where they would have used 20 units of Botox.
