Botox® Cosmetic/Dysport®

Botox® Cosmetic and Dysport® cause relaxation of facial muscles. These products work by blocking the communication between nerve endings and muscles. They are injected into specific areas to treat overactive muscles that cause wrinkles with facial expression. The goal of treatments with Botox® Cosmetic and Dysport® is to soften facial expression. You will still be able to smile and frown and will not look “frozen.” These treatments are virtually painless and are considered a “no downtime” procedures. The softening of wrinkles usually occurs within 2-7 days following the treatment. The results are not permanent.

Botox® Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA) and Dysport® (abobotulinumtoxinA) are both FDA-approved products. Botox® Cosmetic and Dysport® are similar products, simply made by different manufacturers. Botox vs. Dysport is the new Coke vs. Pepsi! Some of our patients have a personal preference.

Both products are derived from botulinum toxin Type A, used to relax muscles in patients, must be injected every 3 to 4 months, have gradual onset in 2 to 7 days, and both have been in use for years; Botox® in the United States and Dysport® in Europe (as Reloxin).

Botox® Cosmetic: $13/unit

As Dysport® is a smaller-sized molecule, the unit measurement is different from Botox®. Dr. Welch and Susan use a 3-to-1 ratio, so they inject 60 units of Dysport® into an area where they would have used 20 units of Botox.
Dysport®: $4.33/unit
